A woman from Peterborough has celebrated a miracle. Naomi Southern-Augustine’s daughter, Wren, recently turned one year old. The amazing thing is that Wren was born four months premature, weighing only 14oz (410g). Her survival odds were not good because she was the smallest baby the unit had ever seen. Her story is a beacon of light in a world inundated with negativity.

Ms Southern-Augustine gave birth to Wren when she was 22 weeks pregnant at Luton and Dunstable Hospital. Because of excessive mucus production, she wasn’t expecting the premature birth. Her family later discovered that Wren was the official “record for being the smallest baby to survive” at the hospitals’ neonatal unit. Wren spent 131 days under intensive care at various hospitals, including Luton, Dunstable, and Peterborough City Hospital.

For the first few weeks after birth, Wren seemed to be doing okay, but then her condition began deteriorating. The medical team advised the parents that they should prepare themselves for the worst outcome because it was unlikely that she would survive. However, against all odds, Wren pulled through, and her parents are profoundly grateful.

To express their gratitude, the family has started a fundraiser for the neonatal intensive care unit that saved Wren’s life. They also intend to write a book to help others going through similar situations. Ms Southern-Augustine said their experience was “isolating,” and they wanted to share their story to give other people hope. Wren’s remarkable survival is a triumph of human resilience and spirit
