Warrington: Woman charged over 1998 'Baby Callum' murder

In Liverpool, a 54-year-old woman named Joanne Sharkey has been charged with the murder of a baby boy who was discovered dead in Cheshire over 26 years ago. In March of 1998, the infant’s body was found in a bin bag that was left in woodland located in Callands, Warrington. The child’s given name is “Callum” since he could not be identified.

Cheshire Police initiated a murder investigation into the case, but no arrests were made until July of 2023. A woman and a man were arrested on suspicion of murder at that time. The woman was on bail from the case until she was re-arrested and charged on Monday.

In local news, people arranged for the baby’s burial and a service was held at that time. Detective Inspector Hannah Friend, part of the Major Crime Review Team for the force, stated that the case was “extremely emotional” but requested that individuals refrain from engaging in speculation. Friend added that Sharkey has the right to a fair trial, now that proceedings are underway against her.

The police force has confirmed that the man who was detained has since been released without charge, and the force is not looking for additional suspects in connection with the case
