Sunset Boulevard, a musical about a Hollywood star struggling with her past, has taken home seven awards at the Olivier Awards. Nicole Scherzinger, who played the lead role, won the award for Best Actress in a Musical. Other notable winners include Sarah Snook for her one-woman production of The Picture of Dorian Gray and Mark Gatiss for his role in The Motive and the Cue.
The awards also celebrated newcomers, with Stranger Things: The First Shadow and Operation Mincemeat both picking up awards for Best Newcomer Plays. During the ceremony, stars such as James Norton spoke about the challenging nature of his role in A Little Life and Hannah Waddingham made three outfit changes while hosting the event.
Andrew Scott discussed the importance of showcasing theatre outside of London, following the success of his one-man show Vanya, which was released as a film after its West End run. Meanwhile, Arlene Phillips, former Strictly Come Dancing judge, won her first Olivier award at the age of 80 for her choreography on Guys & Dolls.
Cast members from Operation Mincemeat celebrated their win for Best New Musical by warning Monday’s theatregoers that they might not be in the best condition for the show. The awards recognised the best in theatre, with nominees coming from both classic and contemporary productions
