Canadian musician Grimes delivered a DJ set at Coachella which was beset with technical issues, leaving the artist ranting in frustration. She has taken to social media to apologise for the problems, stating that she usually oversees every aspect of her shows, but delegated some of the work to an outside specialist and things went awry, explaining that the tempo was double for her tracks and when she attempted to mix them they became “borderline unmixable”. She has promised to personally oversee the files for her second weekend sets at the festival to make sure the mistake isn’t repeated.
Meanwhile, Jakob Nowell took to the Coachella stage as frontman of Sublime, the band made famous by his father, the late Bradley Nowell. Nowell performed with his father’s custom guitar and Mesa Boogie amp, whilst Gaugh played the drums on his original green drum kit for the first time since the last Sublime tour in 1996. British band The Last Dinner Party astonished fans with their festival debut, taking over the Gobi stage in their signature Victorian frocks. Finally, Vampire Weekend closed out their Coachella set with a surprise appearance from Paris Hilton during their country medley.
Social media was awash with commentary about the technical problems Grimes experienced, and many Coachella attendees were frustrated, expressing their anger at the problems the musician experienced. The snafu also highlights the ongoing tension between artists who want to maintain full control over their technical aspects, and event organisers who impose their own regulations and preferences
