Blur, the Britpop greats, graced the stage of Coachella 2024 during day two of the festival, holding a concert that covered much of their music career. The setlist was comprised of a total of thirteen songs, ranging from classic ‘90s tracks such as ‘Girls & Boys’, ‘Popscene’ and ‘Song 2’ to hits from their 2023 album ‘The Ballad of Darren,’ including ‘The Narcissist’ and ‘St. Charles Square.’ The concert-goers were also joined on stage by the Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers, a local group of tribal singers from the Mojave Desert, California, to perform ‘Death of a Party’ together, as well as another song from the singers’ repertoire called ‘Bird Song.’ The choral group ended the performance with a powerful rendition of ‘Tender.’
The set opened up with a performance of ‘St. Charles Square,’ which seamlessly led to other tracks on the setlist. While introducing ‘Song 2’ to the crowd, frontman Damon Albarn shared a humorous moment he encountered on TikTok. He joked, “This song has been so good to us. But I did get shown a TikTok of it being kind of performed by a vacuum cleaner which is you know… It is humbling and inspiring at the same time.” Albarn attempted to engage the crowd to sing along during the bridge of ‘Girls & Boys’ by saying, “You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well sing it, know what I’m saying?”
Blur’s Coachella concert ended with the crowd chanting for more, but their show concluded goodness. The group, having reunited in 2023, set out on a significant reunion tour, releasing their first album in eight years and performing at various locations worldwide, including two headline shows in London’s Wembley Stadium last most recent summer. Fans of the Britpop group can anticipate the release of a new documentary and concert film that will chronicle the recording and release of their album and their reunion tour.
Other notable performances from day two of Coachella 2024 includes the debut festival show of The Last Dinner Party, Grimes dealing with technical difficulties during her set, and a surprise appearance of Paris Hilton with Vampire Weekend during their country “Cocaine Cowboys” medley.
