Grimes had a rough start to her DJ set during the second day of the first weekend of Coachella 2024. Her entrance was impressive, arriving on a spider-like vehicle, and she had a strong start with a mash-up of Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” and BLACKPINK star Jennie’s “Solo.” However, Grimes soon encountered technical difficulties which affected her transitions and caused her music to be played at double its normal tempo. She struggled to recover and apologised multiple times to the crowd. Despite her efforts, some fans have called her set “the worst in the history of Coachella.”
Meanwhile, Sublime performed a tribute show in honour of their late lead singer, Bradley Nowell. Nowell’s son, Jakob, fronts the band and performed along with his father’s custom guitar. The band gave a special performance of “Romeo,” which had not been played live in 25 years. The drum kit used by Bud Gaugh also made an appearance, marking the first time the guitar and drum kit were on the same stage since Sublime’s last tour in 1996.
British quintet The Last Dinner Party also performed a standout set, with their signature Victorian frocks and strong vocals. While Vampire Weekend closed out their last-minute Coachella set with a surprise appearance from Paris Hilton and Abraham Lincoln during their country-style “Cocaine Cowboys” medley.
