Grand National result: I Am Maximus wins at Aintree ahead of Delta Work

In a thrilling Grand National at Aintree, Willie Mullins-trained I Am Maximus has emerged victorious, with jockey Paul Townend at his back. The 7-1 joint favourite swept to victory by a massive seven and a half lengths, leaving Delta Work to settle for runner-up and Minella Indo to come third. Speaking of the achievement, Townend exclaimed, “What an unbelievable race and unbelievable horse.”

While the first fence caused early drama as last year’s winner Corach Rambler unseated jockey Derek Fox, the main event passed smoothly. Of the 32 runners in total, 21 horses completed the race, making it the highest number that crossed the finish line since 1992. Rachael Blackmore looked like she might secure a second National win as Minella Indo challenged for the win in the closing stages. Welsh trainer Christian Williams’ horse, Kitty’s Light, was a solid performer, finishing fifth.

The winning team of Mullins, Townend, and owner JP McManus secured an Irish 1-2-3-4 with I Am Maximus leading the procession. This victory has allowed Mullins to become the favourite to win the British trainers’ championship by the end of the month. The 2021 Grand National win marks Townend’s first National victory at his thirteenth attempt while Mullins has now won two Grand Nationals, following Hedgehunter’s 2005 championship.

The Grand National at Aintree has experienced some organisational changes due to safety concerns. Safety measures included the drastic reduction of racers from 40 to 32 and changes to racing equipment. Other safety precautions included the addition of foam and rubber toe boards on every fence, reducing the height of one of the fences, and implementing the standing start rule. This year’s race went off without any disruption, making it a rousing success.

Aside from the main event, there were other unforgettable moments throughout the day. Gordon Elliot and jockey Jack Kennedy secured a double; their talented mare, Brighterdaysahead, secured a commanding win in the Turners Mersey Novices’ Hurdle. The pair also joined forces and found success in the Maghull Novices Chase with Found A Fifty. Furthermore, Strong Leader’s impressive win in the Liverpool Hurdle justified trainer Olly Murphy’s decision to skip the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham
