Fontaines D.C. have provided a sneak peek of new music on social media by releasing a short clip of an unreleased track. Despite contributing Nick Drake’s “Cello Song” to a compilation album, the Irish band has not released any new music since the third album Skinty Fia in 2022, although that appears to be changing soon. In the video, the frontman of the band, Grian Chatten is seen petting a pig while wearing green pants, a black eye, and several deep cuts and bruises. Over the top of the footage, the mystery song plays.
Chatten sings rapid-fire over a tight, metronomic beat, “I wanna see you alone / I wanna sharp the stone / I wanna bounce the bone / I wanna mess with it,” before heavy, chiming guitar chords join in towards the end of the teaser. In December, Fontaines D.C. joined Massive Attack and Young Fathers to release a limited edition 12-inch single to support the relief work of Médecins Sans Frontières in Gaza.
The band collaborated with the organization in response to Israel’s indiscriminate attacks on the starving, defenseless Gazans, and wrote, “Fontaines DC join millions across the world in demanding an immediate ceasefire and a permanent end to Israel’s brutal occupation of Palestine.” The musicians hope the record will raise desperately-needed funds for Doctors Without Borders in Gaza. Chatten spoke with NME last year, revealing that he previously experienced “fits of anxiety and rage” while on tour.
He explained that his mental health had suffered from a lack of a steady routine and being unable to feel like he belonged anywhere outside of a tour bus for the last five years. In his debut-lasted album, Chaos For The Fly, the Irish musician discussed his mental health issues in greater detail. He also teamed up with Kneecap in November 2021 to release their single “Better Way To Live.
