Margot Robbie to produce “blockbuster” new Monopoly movie

LuckyChap, the production company owned by Margot Robbie, will create a live-action film based on the popular board game Monopoly. The announcement was made at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, with global toy manufacturer Hasbro collaborating on the project. Film studio Lionsgate will develop the feature. Although the plot of the film is unknown at this stage, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson praised LuckyChap’s clear vision for the project.

Monopoly has sold over 500 million copies since it was first created in the early 1900s. As one of the most iconic games in history, the board game has numerous storytelling opportunities that Robbie’s production company and Lionsgate production teams hope to bring to the big screen. Hasbro’s Zev Foreman, Head of Film at Hasbro Entertainment noted, “We are thrilled to have the unique vision of LuckyChap and Lionsgate alongside us to bring this historic piece of popular culture to the big screen.”

While the project is in its early stages, a previous attempt was made at the film adaptation, with Kevin Hart and Tim Story previously attached. However, no significant progress has been made since Hart confirmed to SlashFilm in 2023 that the project was “still in development”. The earlier attempt at the adaptation was claimed to be a challenge for finding the right approach. Roberts’ LuckyChap also produced Barbie, which became the highest-grossing film in 2023.

The specifics of the plot have not yet been revealed, but Liongate’s Fogelson is confident that LuckyChap is the perfect team to create the movie adaptation of the beloved board game. “They are exceptional producers,” he said. “We are tremendously excited to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe can be their next blockbuster.” The board game Monopoly has seen endless reinvention over the years, but this will be the first time it has been made into a live-action feature film
