Heathrow: British Airways and Virgin Atlantic planes collide

Heathrow Airport witnessed a collision between two planes that caused their wings to be damaged. The incident involved 121 passengers on board a British Airways plane and an empty Boeing 787-9 Virgin Atlantic plane that was being towed from Terminal 3. Fortunately, there were no injuries and no delays reported, with the passengers on the British Airways flight scheduled to depart to Accra, Ghana, at 12:40 BST. The airline provided an alternate aircraft, which took off at 18:00 on the same day for the scheduled destination.

Virgin Atlantic is investigating the incident, and maintenance checks are being made on their aircraft that has now been taken out of service. However, the tow movement was provided by a ground-handling company under contract with Virgin Atlantic. Emergency services attended the scene as a precautionary measure, and the authorities confirmed that there is no ongoing impact on airport operations.

The Metropolitan Police is supporting the airport authorities and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch in an investigation into the circumstances of the incidence. Heathrow’s spokesperson stated that they are working alongside the emergency services and airline partners, and no passenger injuries have been reported so far. It was a close call, but luckily the incident did not lead to any fatalities or flight disruptions.
