Fans of ‘The Matrix’ franchise have voiced their disappointment after it was revealed that the upcoming fifth instalment would not be directed by creators Lana and Lily Wachowski. This week, Warner Bros. announced that ‘The Martian’ director Drew Goddard would helm the new movie, marking the first time a ‘Matrix’ film has not been directed by either Wachowski sister. Despite Lana being attached as an executive producer, some fans have insisted that they will not watch the film without the original directors.

One fan stated on X (formerly Twitter), “If it ain’t Wachowski I will not watchski,” while another added, “I was fine with a new ‘Star Wars’ without George Lucas, but a new ‘Matrix’ without either of the Wachowski sisters feels deeply sacrilegious.” However, some have been more accepting of the change, with one fan suggesting that a fresh perspective might be a good thing for the franchise.

Although details about the plot are still under wraps, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production Jesse Ehrman has teased that the new film will build on the fantasy world of the original trilogy. The ‘Matrix’ franchise, which began in 1999, is considered one of the most influential sci-fi series of all time, with three sequels following the original film.

It is currently unknown whether lead cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, or Priyanka Chopra Jonas will return for the fifth instalment. The cast of the previous movie, ‘The Matrix Resurrections’, was led by Reeves and Moss and directed solely by Lana Wachowski.
