A recent study conducted by A2D2 on April 2, using data gathered from Resident Advisor, has revealed that house music is the most popular genre of club music in the UK, reigning supreme in nine out of 16 cities. Among these cities are London, Nottingham, Manchester, Leeds, Brighton, Bristol, Liverpool, Cardiff, and Edinburgh. Techno came in second, with four cities in the UK naming it their favorite genre, including Newcastle, Belfast, Glasgow, and Aberdeen.
Garage, which has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years, is the third most popular genre across 12 of the 16 cities. Speed garage and bassline have also crept into popularity in recent years. The report found that the city of Dundee boasts the most unique taste in Scotland’s club music scene, with disco sharing first place alongside techno. Notably, Dundee was also the only city with funk and soul in its top five.
Trance enthusiasts may want to head to Scotland, as two out of four cities included the electronic genre in their top five. In Sheffield, house and techno tied for first place and were followed by jazz. The study attributed this to Sheffield’s thriving jazz community, which is spearheaded by Sheffield Jazz. The study also found that Birmingham has the most diverse taste in club music, with its most popular genre being drum and bass, followed by afrobeat and grime.
