Joker, the 2019 psychological thriller directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, has left fans clamoring for a follow-up since its release. After much speculation and coy behavior from the cast and crew, a sequel titled Joker: Folie à Deux was confirmed last year when Phillips shared an image of the script on Instagram. Filming for the highly-anticipated sequel reportedly wrapped up in 2023.
Joker: Folie à Deux will see Phoenix reprise his role as the infamous clown prince of crime and will feature Lady Gaga as his love interest, Harley Quinn. The film will also see the return of Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, whose fate was left ambiguous in the previous film. Brendan Gleeson and Harry Lawtey have both been cast in undisclosed roles.
Aside from its star-studded cast, what has caught fans’ attention is the news that the upcoming sequel will be a musical. This rumor was originally fueled by images that Phillips shared on Instagram showing Phoenix and Gaga dancing in full costume. Beetz also previously hinted at “musical elements” in an interview with Variety.
While it’s unclear how the musical elements will be incorporated into the film, the title Joker: Folie à Deux—which translates from French to “madness of two”—has led some fans to speculate that the film will explore the relationship between Joker and Quinn. However, Phillips has previously stated that the goal of the original Joker was to introduce comic book movies into the Joaquin Phoenix universe rather than the other way around, so fans can expect the sequel to continue to subvert expectations.
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024—exactly five years after the original film’s release
