Hunter Schafer, known for her role as transgender teenager Jules Vaughn on the HBO series Euphoria, has announced that she will no longer portray trans characters. She has spoken out about being offered numerous trans roles in the past but now, having gone through the struggles in her own transition, she no longer wants to talk about it.
In a recent interview with GQ, Schafer mentioned, “I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on.” She went on to explain that she does feel a sense of responsibility and guilt sometimes for not being more of a spokesperson since she knows she is one of the most prominent trans people in media today. At the same time, she expressed that continuing to act in transgender roles may not be the most effective way to help the community.
Schafer also shared that she has landed a part in the third season of Euphoria, which has faced multiple delays. Having gained more recognition for her role in the popular dystopian flick, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Schafer is looking forward to focusing on different roles that don’t necessarily align with her trans identity.
Incredibly talented and intelligent, Schafer has become an important voice in the trans community. By speaking up about her experiences as a trans woman, she has helped break down barriers and dismantle stereotypes. It will be exciting to see what she has in store for the future
