Jay Weinberg, former drummer for Slipknot, has made his return to live shows with the funk-metal supergroup Infectious Grooves. Weinberg was fired from Slipknot last November and joined Infectious Grooves earlier this year. He shared the official footage of himself playing ‘Monster Skank’ from the Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia on Instagram. The band also includes Suicidal Tendencies bandmate Mike Muir and Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo.
In an interview with Metal-Roos, Muir offered insight into how Weinberg ended up joining Infectious Grooves. Muir explained that himself and Trujillo put lists of drummers together and that his middle son suggested Jay Weinberg, who he ranked among his two favorite drummers of all time together with Lars Ulrich. Muir contacted Weinberg after watching him play during a Slipknot soundcheck, stating that he was impressed by his versatility.
Slipknot announced that Weinberg’s firing in 2020 was a “creative decision,” due to the band being “intent on evolving.” However, Weinberg stated that the news blindsided him and that he was heartbroken by it. In a recent interview with NME, Shawn “Clown” Crahan revealed that the band aims to “harness the energy” of late members Paul Gray and Joey Jordison.
Weinberg, who has been drumming professionally from a young age, expressed his excitement at returning to the stage. He wrote: “I’m honoured and thrilled to head to Australia with the legendary Infectious Grooves for a special performance at Bluesfest. Stay tuned for more.” Despite his departure from Slipknot, it’s clear that Weinberg has no intention of leaving the drumming scene anytime soon
