Calvin Harris responds to criticism of Ultra Music Festival set: “You wonder why I never play EDM festivals?”

DJ Calvin Harris has defended his set at the recent Ultra Music Festival in Miami after it was described as “underwhelming” in the comments section of a social media post. Harris responded by highlighting the number of streams his songs had achieved, questioning whether he should have played none of his hit tracks, and stressing that he had spent months rehearsing music for the event. Fans moved quickly to support the DJ, telling him that he remained one of the greatest music producers of all time.

A review of Harris’s set in the Miami New Times regarded the performance as more like a “traditional concert” than a “DJ set” since the tracks remained largely unchanged. The review noted that thanks to Harris’s back catalogue he potentially remained one of the only DJs who could get away with such a performance. Harris did, however, include a remix of “This Is What You Came For” featuring Rihanna, and played his platinum-certified “Feel so Close” on the night.

The US-based festival faced difficulties this year with severe weather and was forced to close early on its opening night. Despite this, revellers were still seen dancing in the mud around the festival’s grounds. The festival had previously made headlines when it was announced that Swedish House Mafia would be performing for the first time in six years.

Harris, who last played Ultra Music Festival in Miami in 2013, completed this year’s event, headlining the festival’s main stage after Dutch DJ Armin Van Buuren performed. This year’s event follows the successful 2018 festival, which took place in Virginia Key. In total, close to 170,000 people attended, including festival-goers from every state in the US and 105 other countries
