The Teatro Pereyra, a historic building in Ibiza town, is set to reopen this May after a 16-year restoration as a live music and creative venue, according to a statement released by Pedro Matutes Barceló, Pereyra’s owner. The 125-year-old building will now include a cutting-edge theatre, live music venue, cocktail bar and lounge. The Janet Lussmann Theatre room, with hydraulic platforms comprising 256 movable seats and a state-of-the-art visual technology, will be guided by Spanish musician and composer Nacho Cano.
The colonial-style theatre, first built in 1899, was the “cultural meeting place” of the Balearic island before falling into disarray over the last 30 years. The now-multidisciplinary venue hopes to play host to a year-round programme of creative acts, including cinema, performing arts and live music, from both the local stage and global stage.
Café Pereyra will also function as an eatery by day, transforming into a live music hub with a view of the “best-preserved Renaissance wall in the Mediterranean”. Teatro Pereyra’s cocktail and lounge bar, Sala Sandoval & Compañía, will be located on the first floor, with views of the medieval town from the terrace and a design inspired by Cuban culture.
The venue has been designated a Cultural Heritage Site (BIC) by the regional government due to its historical French design and cultural significance at the turn of the century. Pedro Matutes Barceló, the owner, explained that the intention behind the restoration was to revive the traditional spirit of the theatre, serving as a communal space for both locals and visitors to connect and indulge in a rich array of cultural and leisure pursuits.
Teatro Pereyra aims to be the “social and cultural hub of Ibiza”, aiming for a revival of the traditional theatre scene for all people to enjoy. With the restoration of this Balearic island landmark, a new and exciting cultural destination will be available for locals and tourists alike
