The team behind TimeSplitters Rewind, a fan-led project aiming to recreate the multiplayer mode from the original three TimeSplitters games, has released a video asking for help. Lead writer Jake ‘The Voice’ Parr appeared in the “candid discussion” video to explain that the project is struggling to finish due to an increasingly challenging industry that has “placed our developers into an incredibly challenging space where Rewind cannot be a focus for them”. The project is free and cannot be a priority for many developers, with character artists, animators, environment artists, a technical designer and someone to fix bugs all being asked for.
TimeSplitters Rewind was granted permission by Crytek UK in 2013, who held the rights at the time. The project’s goal is to recreate the addictive and chaotic multiplayer mode found in the original three games. Parr explained that many of the developers working on Rewind have since been able to leverage their experience into a career.
The video was the first release from TimeSplitters Rewind since December 2022. Parr continued to explain that the project is “close” to being the “first release”, of which the developers want to be able to do justice to each game while feeling cohesive. The TimeSplitters franchise has been cancelled following the closure of Free Radical Design and the scrapping of their TimeSplitters project by Embracer Group. As it stands, Rewind is the closest fans will be getting to a new TimeSplitters game.
Embracer recently confirmed they had finished their restructuring and were focusing on increasing profitability by “simply making better products and games” after laying off 8% of their staff and closing a number of studios. CEO Lars Wingefors did not rule out the studio making further acquisitions in the future. Fans are encouraged to head to the Rewind Discord to get involved or find more information.
