Tom Holland, the star of Marvel’s Spider-Man films, will play Romeo in the upcoming West End production of Romeo & Juliet, directed by Jamie Lloyd. Newcomer Francesca Amewudah-Rivers will play Juliet, with Freema Agyeman as Nurse and Tomiwa Edun as Capulet. The show will run at the Duke Of York’s Theatre from May 11 to August 3, with tickets already sold out. Other cast members include Michael Balogun as Friar, Mia Jerome as Montague, Daniel Quinn-Toye as Paris, Ray Sesay as Tybalt, Nima Taleghani as Benvolio, and Joshua-Alexander Williams as Mercutio. Callum Heinrich and Kody Mortimer will serve as Camera Operators.
Amewudah-Rivers has previously appeared in two seasons of the BBC series Bad Education. She also has stage experience in productions at the Globe and Lyric Hammersmith. Holland commented on the cast announcement, exclaiming, “Beyond excited to announce our cast for Romeo and Juliet. I can’t wait to get started and I know we’ll create something really special together.” Amewudah-Rivers added, “I’m so grateful to be making my West End debut as Juliet with The Jamie Lloyd Company. It’s a dream to be joining this team of incredible artists with Jamie at the helm. I’m excited to bring a fresh energy to this story alongside Tom and to welcome new audiences to the theatre.”
Lloyd, who previously directed Martin Freeman in the 2014 Trafalgar Square staging of Richard III, is excited to direct the upcoming production. Lloyd is also known for helming many successful versions of traditional plays, including The Seagull with Emilia Clarke, Doctor Faustus with Kit Harington, and most recently, the musical Sunset Boulevard with Nicole Scherzinger.
