Around 40,000 fans gathered in New York’s Times Square last night (March 26) to watch Colombian singer Shakira perform a pop-up free show. The event was only announced hours before on her official social media channels. Shakira began the show with her 2006 hit ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ and also performed several tracks from her newly released album ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’, including ‘Te Felicito’, ‘TQG’, ‘Como Donde y Cuando’ and ‘Punteria’, and finished with a version of the viral hit ‘BZRP Music Sessions #53’.
“I’m happy to be here surrounded by my Latin people,” Shakira told the ecstatic crowd before exiting the stage. In addition to the performance, the Colombian star was also crowned the most searched musician of 2023 by Google’s Year In Search. The achievement comes after releasing a collaboration with producer Bizarrap at the beginning of the year, titled ‘BZRP Music Sessions #53’.
Shakira’s latest offering ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’ was released last week (March 22). In a four-star review provided by NME, Shakira was praised for her ability to bring Latin pop music to a global platform. The review noted her decision to sing fully in Spanish and referred to the album as a “vulnerable yet versatile collection” showing “there are no limits to the art of her catharsis through song”. Shakira also has a new statue in her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia depicting her iconic ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ pose that was unveiled last December.
Despite the sudden announcement, the free show was a massive success, drawing tens of thousands of excited fans. With her artistic talent and insights, Shakira continues to break down barriers and push the boundaries of Latin pop music. For Shakira’s dedicated fans, it was another epic night to remember
