During an episode of the Restless Natives podcast, Travis frontman Fran Healy revealed that a chance meeting with David Beckham resulted in the footballer’s iconic “Hoxton fin” mohawk. Healy shared that Beckham saw him sporting the haircut and was inspired to get it for himself. Healy’s barber was responsible for the cut and gave it to him in 2001. Two weeks later, Beckham went for it and the rest is history. This style was huge across the UK at the time and it became even more widespread after Beckham notably adopted it. During the interview, Healy also spoke about the inspiration behind Travis’s forthcoming album, L.A. Times.
L.A. Times marks Travis’s tenth studio album and is set to be released soon. During the interview, Healy spoke about his life in Los Angeles and the band’s history. He reminisced about the time around the release of The Invisible Band, Travis’s third album, which hit the top of the UK Albums Chart and sold more copies than their previous album had in less than a year. Aside from L.A. Times, Travis has also released a new single, Gaslight, their first new music since the last year.
In a conversation with NME, Healy opened up about the inspiration behind L.A. Times’s title. He explained that the area where his studio is located is where Skid Row is at its most intense, where one can see people living in extreme poverty and desperation. He recalls seeing a man in a yellow Lamborghini, adorned with jewellery while surrounded by people with nothing. Later on, Travis guitarist, Andy Dunlop, sent Healy a piece of music they had worked on. From that, Healy created a song that reflected his experiences in the area, contemplating how such suffering and wealth could coexist. The song would eventually lend its title to the album.
The band is currently slated to support The Killers in their UK and Ireland arena tour later this summer
