There’s great news for fans of This Is Spinal Tap, as it has been revealed that two legendary drummers will be making cameo appearances in the upcoming sequel. Lars Ulrich of Metallica and Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers will both reportedly appear in the film, although details of their roles have not yet been disclosed. It is believed that both musicians will play short-lived drummers for the fictitious band Spinal Tap.
The announcement was made by Deadline Hollywood, who also revealed that other new cast members have been confirmed for the film. Fran Drescher, who appeared in the original movie, is set to reprise her role as publicist Bobbi Flekman. Other new additions to the cast include Don Lake, John Michael Higgins, Jason Acuña, Nina Conti, Griffin Matthews, Kerry Godliman, Chris Addison, comedian Brad Williams, and musician Paul Shaffer.
Ulrich and Smith are not the only high-profile musicians set to feature in the Spinal Tap sequel. Last year, it was revealed that Paul McCartney and Elton John would also be appearing in the film. The much-anticipated sequel was initially slated to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the original movie, but it’s unclear when it will now be released.
When discussing the decision to make a sequel, actor-director Rob Reiner, who appeared in the first movie as the fictional director Marty Di Bergi, spoke to NME in May 2022. He explained: “We never thought we would do a sequel. It was only because we started to talk to each other and we came up with an idea we think might work – we don’t know it will. We’re going to try. The bar is incredibly high. We debated whether or not we should do it… I said, ‘Look at us, we’re all in our 70s. How much time are we going to have [left] to have some fun?’”
It’s exciting news for fans of this much-loved comedy classic, and with a cast of this calibre, there’s no doubt that the sequel will be worth the wait
