Areum, a former member of the K-pop girl group T-ARA, has reportedly been hospitalized after attempting suicide. According to South Korean news outlet Osen, the singer attempted to take her own life on March 27 and has yet to regain consciousness. She also reportedly left behind a suicide note. The news comes a day after she accused her ex-husband, businessman Kim Young-gul, of physically and emotionally abusing her and her children, as well as engaging in gambling and prostitution in a post on Instagram.
Areum filed for divorce from Kim in December 2023 and announced plans to get re-married to her new fiancée once the divorce is official. At the time, she also hinted at her ex-husband’s alleged abuse, saying that she had “lived in such immense pain” and had “much proof to show”. Areum made her debut as a K-pop idol in 2012 as a member of T-ARA and later formed the sub-unit T-ARA N4 with Eunjung, Hyomin, and Jiyeon in April 2013. She left both groups in July of the same year.
Since leaving T-ARA, Areum has competed on several reality TV competitions, including The Unit in 2017, Kookmin Singer in 2021, and Sing Again 3 in 2023. For those struggling with mental health issues, several organizations offer help and support, including Help Musicians UK, Music Support Org, and YOUNG MINDS. The Campaign Against Living Miserably for young men, CALM, and The Samaritans also provide confidential support. It’s essential to take care of one’s mental health and seek help when necessary.
We hope Areum recovers from her suicide attempt and receives the necessary support to overcome any challenges she may be facing. Abuse is not acceptable, and it’s vital to speak out if someone is experiencing it
