The Bread and Butter Thing is revolutionizing the way food banks are run in the UK. With over 90 hubs spread out across the country, the charity provides nutritious fruits, vegetables and other household essentials to over 45,000 members each week. Unlike other food banks, The Bread and Butter Thing doesn’t provide a pre-determined set of items in a food package. Rather, members are given a surprise selection of items that are all surplus foods, which would otherwise be discarded.

In addition to providing food, the hubs offer a safe space for community members to connect with each other and seek advice on a variety of topics. Staffed by volunteers, the hubs have become a vital resource for people who are looking to find work, obtain social housing, or manage their mental health struggles.

Mark Game, CEO of The Bread and Butter Thing, is proud of the charity’s impact on communities, stating, “The Bread and Butter Thing is about creating routes out of poverty and building strong communities. Over 80% of our members have previously had to skip meals to feed their families. Now, most save at least £25 a week on their food budgets, with the added benefits of better quality and a bigger variety of food.”

The impact of The Bread and Butter Thing has not gone unnoticed. The charity was recently awarded the title of Community Partnership of the Year at the Global Good Awards. The accolade recognizes organizations that are making a positive impact on society and inspiring change through sustainability and ethical leadership.

The Bread and Butter Thing is not just feeding people, but changing lives. By providing food, and a sense of community, The Bread and Butter Thing is proving that change can be made from the ground up
