Beth Ditto, best known for her work with Gossip, recently revealed that she had never heard Rihanna’s “Umbrella” until Jessie Ware sang it at Glastonbury. The conversation took place during a new episode of Ware’s “Table Manners” podcast, which included an interview with the Gossip singer.

Ditto recalled the first time she heard the song when Ware sang it in the audience during a rainy festival. Ditto admitted that she had no idea the song was already a chart hit. She recounted the memory of the day when “two girls walked up to me, [I] remember y’all singing ‘Umbrella, ella, ella’ and I was thinking ‘These girls are singing a hit!’ I did not know it was a Rihanna song, I thought you made it up!”

Gossip has released their latest album “Real Power,” their first full-length LP since reforming in 2019. The album received a four-star rating from NME and enables the band to “find new levels of potency by showing a little restraint.”

Ditto spoke to NME about the band’s return and how they have grown as artists since their inception. “When we began, so much about Gossip was about running away – that was always in the music,” she said. “We survived. We came from nothing, and we got the f*ck out of there. And to be here 20 years later and still making music together is just incredible.”

Gossip is set to perform at Glastonbury Fest in June, where they will join Jessie Ware, Dua Lipa, Coldplay, and SZA, who are all slated to headline the iconic Pyramid Stage this summer
