Del Amitri’s Justin Currie shares diagnosis: “I know Parkinson’s will stop me”

In a recent interview with the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Justin Currie, the singer of Del Amitri, bravely opened up about his struggle with Parkinson’s disease. At 59 years old, Currie has been faced with the reality that he can no longer perform in the way that he would like to. The diagnosis has been a reminder to Currie that nobody is invincible and that disability can affect anyone.

Despite accepting that he will eventually have to stop performing, Currie remains hopeful and determined to work through his diagnosis. He discussed how Parkinson’s has changed his personality in ways that are not necessarily negative. The condition has made him more aware of disability and the fact that everyone will experience some sort of difficulty in their lives.

Currie hopes that his openness about his condition will encourage others to talk about their struggles with Parkinson’s and other disabilities. He notes how the cliché “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is not true. Losing a leg or having a condition like Parkinson’s does not make a person stronger.

Del Amitri is currently on tour supporting fellow ‘80s Scottish act Simple Minds. The tour has seen performances in Leeds, Bournemouth, Cardiff and will end in Glasgow. Any remaining tickets for the shows can be found on Ticketmaster.

Despite the diagnosis, Currie remains optimistic about the future of Del Amitri and the possibilities that lay ahead. While Parkinson’s may stop him from performing live in the future, his passion for music and songwriting remain untouched
