Ruth Jones addresses rumours of ‘Gavin and Stacey’ return after James Corden West End reunion

Ruth Jones has addressed the recent rumours of a potential Gavin and Stacey reunion, following her reunion with co-stars James Corden and Rob Brydon on the red carpet in March. The actress, who is currently starring in Sister Act: The Musical on the West End, was asked by Zoe Ball on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show about the possibility of resolving the cliffhanger ending of the 2019 Christmas Special, in which Nessa proposed to Smithy. Jones responded by saying that she and Corden believe the characters still exist, with Nessa working at the slots in Barry Island, and added that “you never say never in this world”.

According to Deadline, another Christmas special of Gavin and Stacey is apparently in the works, due to be filmed later this year. However, stars of the show have previously played down the possibility of a return, with Joanna Page, who played Stacey, stating in November that she “can see them never doing any more because it was nice to leave it on a cliffhanger”. James Corden has also previously stated that while he and Jones would love to collaborate again, he is uncertain about the future of Gavin and Stacey, questioning whether they could truly fulfil fans’ expectations and whether there is something “perfect” about the show’s ending.

Despite the uncertainty, fans of Gavin and Stacey remain hopeful for a reunion, with the Christmas Special attracting 18.5 million viewers and breaking a record for BBC iPlayer. The revival of the show, which originally aired between 2007 and 2010, was highly-anticipated and received positive reviews for its comedic timing and poignant exploration of family relationships. Fans will undoubtedly remain eager to find out whether the beloved characters of Nessa and Smithy will finally receive their happy ending, but for now, the future of Gavin and Stacey remains uncertain
