The director of a care company in the UK has been sent to prison for 38 months for submitting fake invoices to her local council’s Covid-19 response fund. Caroline Hunt, a resident of Clacton-on-Sea, had presented £151,000 in fraudulent invoices to Essex County Council. At Chelmsford Crown Court, she confessed to eight gang charges and asked for forgiveness after having earlier refused to accept responsibility.
During the trial, Hunt was seen covering her face with her hands to conceal her tears. One of her defence barristers said that her husband’s death a few years ago contributed to the “fallout of her life.” “She may have once thought she had everything, but now she has nothing,” he added.
The arraignment subjected Hunt to legal punishment under the country’s criminal justice system. The UK government has been taking fraud quite seriously, with the aim of curbing the large-scale exploitation of government schemes during the Covid-19 pandemic.
