The possibility of Jake Gyllenhaal taking on the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in James Gunn’s DC Universe has been brought up once again. Gyllenhaal expressed his interest in the role, stating that it would be an “honour always.” However, he also acknowledged the intimidating history of actors who have played classic roles, using his upcoming role as Iago in Othello as an example.
Gyllenhaal has been linked to the Caped Crusader role since the early 2000s when Christopher Nolan first announced his adaptation of Batman on the big screen. Although he was a top contender, Christian Bale ultimately got the part. The actor was once again linked to the role in 2017 when Matt Reeves began searching for actors for The Batman, but Robert Pattinson was ultimately chosen for the part.
While The Batman Part 2, directed by Reeves and starring Pattinson, is set to release in October 2026 due to delays caused by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, roles in the DC Universe are continuously being filled. Among those cast are Superman, Supergirl, and Lex Luthor.
Despite Gyllenhaal’s interest in the Batman role, nothing has been confirmed yet. Nevertheless, The Batman, directed by Reeves, received high praise from critics and fans alike, with a four-star rating from NME. Reeves blended gritty mob drama with film-noir detective thriller, and delivered some psychological horror with the help of ultra-creepy villain Riddler, who is portrayed by Paul Dano
