Comedic duo Cheech and Chong are making a comeback to the big screen in a new documentary, titled “Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie.” Directors David Bushell, who has previously worked on films such as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Dallas Buyers Club”, helmed the project. The film premiered at the SXSW festival on March 12, and is expected to be the last project that Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong will work on together.
Cheech and Chong’s career has spanned several decades and has been filled with successes. They are well-known for their stand-up comedy shows, studio recordings, and feature films, all of which often revolve around their love of cannabis culture. “Up in Smoke,” their debut film, which was released in 1978, laid the foundation for their creative partnership.
Bushell had been trying to persuade the duo to collaborate on a final film together, similar to their first movie, for over 20 years. However, Chong’s imprisonment in 2003-2004 for conspiring to distribute drug paraphernalia made the project potential problematic. Bushell was later able to convince them to participate in a career-retrospective documentary, which premiered at SXSW.
The film is a mixture of interviews with the duo, as well as clips of their on-stage performances and previous interviews, along with animated anecdotes. Bushell also captured unscripted moments of the duo driving through Joshua Tree National Park in California. Despite the duo’s uncertainty about the film, they ultimately agreed to do it and thoroughly enjoyed the creative process.
“Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie” is currently seeking distribution. Despite being a documentary, it appeals to longtime fans of the duo who have followed their careers over the years. The film serves as a proper tribute to two of the most creative and influential members in the comedy industry
