The Prince of Wales is set to visit Sheffield housing initiatives on Tuesday to promote his homelessness project. The visit comes at a time when rumours and conspiracy theories surrounding the health of the Princess of Wales have been swirling around social media. Following a controversial Mother’s Day picture, which was later withdrawn by photo agencies due to concerns it had been digitally enhanced, recent video footage of Catherine, Princess of Wales shopping near her home in Windsor has emerged. Despite the team around the prince and princess asking for privacy during her recovery from surgery, images of the princess looking well have sparked fresh speculation online.
The Prince of Wales has maintained his focus on his homelessness project, which he launched last summer. The ambitious five-year scheme to tackle homelessness across six locations in the UK, including Sheffield, has taken a close personal interest in developing local partnerships. The Homewards initiative is aimed at bringing together grassroots organisations, charities and commercial partners to form local coalitions. In Sheffield, the project tackles the problem of homelessness, which has seen over 4,000 people or families apply to be registered as homeless – the council’s highest figure to date.
To support his cause, the DIY retail chain Homebase has pledged 1,500 “starter packs” of furniture, paint and other items to help families moving into new accommodation. Housing campaigner Kwajo Tweneboa has also stepped up to help organise the packs, stating that safe, permanent and secure housing is paramount to ensure homelessness does not become part of a family’s story. The approach of the Homewards project has been to bring together grassroots organisations, charities and commercial partners to form local coalitions to fight the worsening problem of homelessness.
Prince William will be hoping the visit to Sheffield will put the focus back on his project and that the fresh conspiracy theories and speculation surrounding the princess will be put to rest. With the aim of providing support to families on the brink of or experiencing homelessness, the visit will highlight the importance of grassroots movements, charities and commercial partners working together to form local partnerships aimed at tackling homelessness
