Wizkid doesn’t want to be called an “Afrobeats” artist anymore

Nigerian artist Wizkid took to Instagram stories on March 17 to announce that his upcoming album is complete. Along with this announcement, he revealed that his sound would be different from his previous works and expressed his displeasure with people labelling him as an “Afrobeats” artist. “If you like Afrobeats, please don’t download my album! I’m not a fucking Afrobeats artiste! Don’t call me that, hoe! I’m not Afro anything, bitch!” he said.

In a longer message, the “Ojuelegba” star clarified that his 2020 album “Made in Lagos” was also “not an ‘Afrobeats’ album.” He further explained that he creates different genres of music and dislikes being labelled as “Afrobeats” because that essentially puts all African-made music in one box. Other African pop stars, including Burna Boy, have also denounced the term, with Burna Boy once calling the genre “mostly about nothing, literally nothing.”

Despite expressing frustration with people constantly labelling him and his music, Wizkid is “true to his art” and insists that he’s an “artist” first. His most recent album, “More Love, Less Ego,” was released in 2022 and received a perfect score from NME
