British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran surprised fans at his Mumbai concert by performing a song in Punjabi for the first time. He invited Indian artist Diljit Dosanjh to join him on stage and the pair sang Dosanjh’s hit track “Lover” to the delight of the crowd, who praised Sheeran’s perfect pronunciation. The singers later shared a clip of the performance on their Instagram accounts. Dosanjh is a major star in India and around the world and previously collaborated on a track with Sia. Sheeran’s Mumbai gig was part of his Asia and Europe tour.
Fans of the crossover act rushed to social media to heap praise upon it, with one writing it was “the collaboration we never knew we needed”. Another said they had seen “history in the making”. A critic suggested that by getting more Western stars to sing in Punjabi, Dosanjh was blowing up the Indian music scene.
Sheeran enthused about his time in India, where he had the opportunity to share the stage with Dosanjh. He also hinted at more to come in his musical relationship with the Indian artist. Meanwhile, social media buzz continued to build, with notable people such as actor Varun Dhawan expressing their enthusiasm for what he called “global domination”.
