M25 closures: Work 'on schedule' as Monday rush hour looms

The M25 in Surrey is currently undergoing maintenance work, with the closure of one of the UK’s busiest stretches happening during the day for the first time ever. National Highways has confirmed that the work is “on schedule” and due to be completed by Monday morning. The closure, covering both carriageways between junctions 10 and 11, began at 9pm on Friday.

A five-mile diversion has been put in place, and travellers have been advised to avoid using the M25 where possible. People affected by the closure may include those travelling to Gatwick and Heathrow Airports, as well as the Channel ports. Traffic was beginning to build up on Sunday morning, and an accident has also partially blocked the A245 in both directions along the diversion route.

The work will be the first of five scheduled daytime closures between now and September, as part of a £317m upgrade. In the meantime, National Highways is continuing to work at the site in order to complete the project on time for Monday, ahead of the expected influx of traffic. If there are any delays to the work, it could cause major disruption on Monday for commuters and travellers in the area.

National Highways has confirmed that the M25 carriageway between junctions nine and 11 typically carries between 4,000 and 6,000 vehicles per hour in each direction at peak times at the weekend. With junction 10 being one of the busiest sections of the M25, with more than 300,000 vehicles passing through each day, maintaining the schedule for the maintenance work is essential to avoid major disruption for those travelling in the area
