‘Black Mirror’ fans spot hidden message in season seven teaser trailer

Black Mirror fans are convinced that a clue to a returning episode is hidden in the trailer for season seven. Netflix confirmed that the new season will be released next year and consist of six episodes. Although no firm date has been announced, some fans believe a reference to USS Callister was spotted in the accompanying trailer. The episode revolved around Jesse Plemons’ character creating a simulated reality in which he acted as Captain Kirk for an unsuspecting crew made up of his co-workers.

Fans took to Twitter to express their excitement at the possibility of a USS Callister sequel. One user replied “hip hip hooray”, while another noted the familiar music used in the preview trailer. Netflix also confirmed that one of the new episodes will continue from the original, stating that “Captain Robert Daly may have died in the original episode, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning…”

Charlie Brooker, the show’s creator, has previously spoken about his desire to “stretch the parameters of what a Black Mirror episode even is”. While the sixth season consisted of five episodes starring A-listers, season five only featured three episodes. The show was first launched on Channel 4, where it stayed for two seasons before being cancelled. Brooker recently revealed in his book Inside Black Mirror that the network effectively ended the show, leading to the move to Netflix for season three. Since then, the show has featured stars including Miley Cyrus and Aaron Paul.

Fans will have to wait until next year to see if the theories surrounding USS Callister are true.
