Many of the biggest names in rock have come together to re-record Mark Knopfler’s song “Going Home,” which has been released to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America. The 2024 edition of the track features contributions from a staggering array of guitar legends, including Brian May, Bruce Springsteen, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood, Jeff Beck, and the last recording by the late Beck shortly before he passed away in January 2023. Other recognizable names include Ringo Starr on drums, Sting on bass, and The Who’s frontman Roger Daltrey on harmonica.
Originally featured on the 1983 soundtrack to “Local Hero,” Knopfler’s solo hit has been reworked into a nine-minute epic that pays tribute to one of the most celebrated guitarists of all time. The track was produced by Knopfler’s longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher at British Grove Studios in West London. Fletcher referred to Jeff Beck’s contributions as “absolutely meant to be,” adding “what he did with it, it just brings you to tears.”
The charity track has been released ahead of the 2024 Teenage Cancer Trust gig series, with closing night performances from Daltrey, Kelly Jones, Robert Plant with Saving Grace, Pete Townshend, Eddie Vedder, and Paul Weller. Daltrey, who has curated the annual charity gigs for over two decades, recently announced that he would be stepping down after this year. Talking about the events’ successes, Daltrey said, “The £32 million raised from these concerts has been the foundation for the 28 specialised units within the NHS, as well as specialist nurses and youth workers to be there for a young person when cancer has turned their world upside down.”
