K-Pop girl group STAYC has released a remake of TWICE’s hit song ‘Fancy’ as part of Spotify’s tenth-anniversary celebration for its K-Pop ON! playlist. The group, composed of members Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon, and J, worked on a reimagined version of the song that is more R&B-based and soothing, making it perfect for everyday listening. According to Sieun, the song is special to them, as they cherished it while practising to become musicians. STAYC’s version of the song reflects the growth the group has gone through in the past few years and showcases the diverse music spectrum they can work with.
STAYC previously released songs that showcased their bright and bubbly musical style, which celebrates youthful empowerment and exuberance. Picking ‘Fancy’ provides STAYC an opportunity to express their different vocal chords and performance flare, as each member of the group possesses a unique and distinctive voice. Yoon added that, while STAYC’s previous songs were poppy and bubbly, their R&B take on ‘Fancy’ gives their fans an opportunity to see them in a new light.
Isa initially struggled to work through her perceptions of the original version of ‘Fancy’ versus their take on things, as she attempted to match the high energy level of the original song. However, their producer reminded her that their cover had to be their take on the track, which was “sort of different for me to find my own balance.” Nevertheless, the effort put in by each member has resulted in a reimagined version that reflects STAYC’s growth as a girl group.
STAYC’s version of ‘Fancy’ is available to stream on Spotify’s K-Pop ON! playlist, and the group is focusing on releasing a full-length album across diverse genres this year. Sumin hopes that the group’s versatility as artists will enable them to cover ballads and dance songs, showcasing the full spectrum of genres they can cover.
