Vampire Weekend has released their latest single, ‘Classical’, the third song from their upcoming album ‘Only God Was Above Us’. The song was written by the lead vocalist Ezra Koenig and produced by Ariel Rechtshaid. ‘Classical’ is a whimsical song with an orchestral arrangement by Will Canzoneri, Koenig and Rechtshaid. The lyrics contemplate change, asking the question, “And when it does, which classical remains?”
The video for ‘Classical’ was directed by the band’s longtime creative director Nick Harwood. The music video depicts the band, as well as Rechtshaid, Ray Suen and their drum tech Josh Goldsmith, playing the song on guitar against a green screen backdrop of fresco paintings, churches and clocks.
‘Classical’ is preceded by two other singles, ‘Capricorn’ and ‘Gen-X Cops’, which will also feature on the band’s fifth LP, ‘Only God Was Above Us’. The album, released on April 5 via Columbia, is their first in five years.
In other news, the band has launched a new podcast called ‘Vampire Campfire’. The podcast will be released “semi-regularly for the foreseeable future”, and fans who watch will be “invited behind the scenes into a longstanding and formerly private Vampire Weekend ritual”. The podcast will also include advanced insights into the band’s new album, as well as Vampire Weekend ‘Easter Eggs’.
Finally, the band has announced a 2024 North American tour starting in April. Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of ‘Only God Was Above Us’ and can pre-order or pre-save the album now
