Crimestoppers is launching a nationwide anti-corruption hotline to report police corruption in the Metropolitan Police. The hotline has already been in place since November 2022, and has received nearly 3,000 reports and calls regarding the force. This service aims to report officers and staff for corruption, abuse, and other breaches of trust or power.
The chairman of the National Police Chiefs’ Council states that this hotline will enable them to “take action” against any reports of corruption, which is essential in purging policing of those responsible for wrongdoing. Chief Constable Gavin Stephens added that tough action must be taken to eradicate wrongdoing from policing, for now and the future.
The hotline was implemented following a series of scandals, such as the strip-searching of children, the murder of Sarah Everard, and the sharing of images of Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman after their deaths. The initiative has led to 728 Met Police-led investigations.
The nationwide launch of this scheme will be seen as a success for the Met Police, indicating their efforts to root out corrupt and abusive officers, restoring trust among Londoners despite the controversies. However, campaigners will hope that the identified rogue officers through the hotline will be dealt with quickly and efficiently to maintain requisite standards, attempting to prevent such people from entering policing ever again
