New safety measures installed at St John’s Gardens

Merseyside Police has successfully obtained funding to install new lighting, CCTV, and a dedicated speaker system at St John’s Gardens in Liverpool city centre. The force has worked with partners to reduce criminal activity and serious violence in the area, and these new safety measures are expected to deter potential offenders and broadcast crime prevention advice. From April 2023 to February 2024, the number of incidents of serious violence has decreased by 50% in this area compared to the same period in the previous year, which shows that the efforts are paying off.

Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet member, welcomed the move, praising it as an important step towards improving security in St John’s Gardens. Liverpool city centre is known for being a safe place, and the installation of the new CCTV, lighting, and speaker system illustrates the city’s commitment to ensuring that people can continue to enjoy this green space. Similarly, Sergeant Carol McCartney from Local Policing highlighted the importance of ensuring that that the local residents and visitors feel safe at all times, and St John’s Gardens remain a key area of focus for the force.

Merseyside Police is exploring different avenues to reduce crime in the region, and the installation of the new safety measures is part of its ongoing efforts to prevent offences from taking place in the gardens. The force regularly conducts dedicated hotspot policing patrols with uniformed and plainclothes officers from various departments, including neighbourhood, targeted and R&P. Officers from the prevention team have also patrolled the gardens to prevent, educate, and protect the Merseyside community from serious violence and knife crime.

To build stronger relationships with young people and reduce levels of anti-social behaviour, Merseyside Police has also funded a new Youth Outreach team, Positive Pathways, in the city centre. The team is actively patrolling the area around the gardens to interact with young people and understand any issues that may arise. Overall, these measures demonstrate Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council’s commitment to creating a safer environment in St John’s Gardens and the wider Liverpool city centre.
