Kneecap pull out of SXSW due to festival’s US Army ties

Earlier this week, Northern Irish rap group Kneecap has refused to participate in the upcoming South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. The festival has received criticism for being sympathetic to the military and the weapons manufacturers. Kneecap mentioned on Twitter that they are standing in solidarity with Palestine and emphasized the “deep unacceptable links the festival has to weapons companies.”

According to an article by The Guardian, Chicago-based artist, Ella Williams, was the first one to expose the relationship between the military and the festival, referring to sponsors as “genocide profiteers.” As a result, rock band Proper, indie artists Mamalarky, Eliza McLamb, Shalom, and Lambrini Girlsw withdrew from SXSW.

It is worth noting that although not a sponsor, subsidiary of RTX (formerly Raytheon), Collins Aerospace, will share the stage as an “official participant” in the event, promoting“Defence Innovation” according to The Austin Chronicle. Last year, Vice reported that RTX is responsible for producing and distributing Israel’s aerial defense system, the Iron Dome.

Despite withdrawing from the festival, Kneecap has remained committed to their pro-Palestinian stance, often sharing their views on social media accounts and even wearing pro-Palestinian badges in the Late Late Show. The group took a principled step by canceling their three shows to raise awareness about the festival’s connections with the weapons companies and to stand in solidarity with Palestine.

Mixmag has sought comments from SXSW representatives on this matter. Nonetheless, it is essential to recognize that Kneecap and others have decided to boycott the festival, which is set to run until March 16
