Liverpool City Council has announced plans to expand its support services for dementia patients by opening 20 new beds for respite and specialist care. The expansion will take place at Sedgemoor, a purpose-built care home in Norris Green. The facility will add 10 new beds for permanent residence for dementia patients, and 10 short-term beds for carers in need of respite care. The move comes in response to the increasing demand for professional care for families with loved ones suffering from dementia.
Sedgemoor care home is designed to cater specifically for dementia patients, with an open-plan layout that allows for more natural light to create a calming and peaceful atmosphere. The facility also features a secure garden space where patients can take part in activities. The site has previously provided reablement facilities and day care services for dementia patients, but the expansion will see it provide specialist respite care and 24-hour support services.
The new expansion comes as a relief for carers as they continue to provide care for their loved ones with dementia. Many carers find the role rewarding yet paramount and challenging at the same time. The opening of two separate care facilities for dementia patients and carers will address the issue by providing adequate professional care and planned respite care for the carers. Liverpool City Council recognises the significant responsibility carers undertook and encourages them to continue supporting their loved ones to remain independent as long as possible.
The new services will be officially launched on 11 March by the Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Cllr Angela Coleman. According to Councillor Angela Coleman, the new extension will provide much-needed facilities for dementia patients and address the limited offer of planned respite care. As their illness progresses, it sometimes becomes more difficult for dementia patients to maintain independence while living at home, requiring more supportive care home environments. The council’s commitment is to provide the best possible care to all residents, and the new extension forms part of this commitment.
Overall, Liverpool City Council’s proposal to expand the dementia support facilities addresses the current challenge of inadequate service capacity, and will significantly benefit families with loved ones suffering from dementia. The new care facilities will address carer’s needs by providing planned respite care, offering a temporary break from caring duties. It also provides patients with an environment that is calm, peaceful, and secure, enabling them to maintain independence in a supportive environment
