Robert Downey Jr. wins first Oscar: “I’d like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy”

Robert Downey Jr. took home his first Oscar for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film “Oppenheimer”. Downey Jr. won the award for Best Supporting Actor, beating out other top stars such as Ryan Gosling, Sterling K. Brown and Mark Ruffalo. When he stepped up to the stage to accept the award, he was greeted with a standing ovation from the audience.

He humorously thanked Sam Rockwell and the other actors who had introduced the nominees before commenting on his role in “Oppenheimer”. Downey Jr. revealed that he needed the job more than it needed him. He further added that Emma Stone was instrumental in assembling one of the greatest casts and crews of all time, with actors such as Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, and Matt Damon.

The film “Oppenheimer” with a record of 13 nominations led all other films going into this ceremony. At the time of the article, the movie was still up for awards such as Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture.

This year’s ceremony, held in Los Angeles, had Jimmy Kimmel as the host. Jimmy Kimmel took a snipe at the Academy’s failure to recognize certain individuals. Also, according to Kimmel, Gerwig and Robbie received less recognition than they deserved, in what was his opening monologue. When the audience applauded Kimmel’s comment, the host made a comeback by saying, “You’re the ones who chose not to vote for her.”
