Greg Rutherford, a former Olympic athlete, had to withdraw from the grand final of Dancing On Ice after getting injured during rehearsals. The 37-year-old athlete was supposed to compete against Ryan Thomas, Adele Roberts and Miles Nazaire in the event. Vanessa James, his professional partner, revealed on Instagram that Rutherford had suffered a “significant injury” and was rushed to the hospital.
Expressing his disappointment at having to pull out, Rutherford said that he was “devastated” but understood that “these things happen”. He called it a “nightmare way for this to finish”. ITV, in a statement, said that the broadcaster would “be helping to support Greg and wish him well with his recovery”.
Rutherford, who won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London and a bronze at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, was forced to retire from the sport in 2018 because of an ankle injury. Before the final, Nazaire paid tribute to the former long jumper on Instagram.
Coronation Street’s Ryan Thomas and his ice skating partner Amani Fancy were crowned the winners of the dance competition. The other participants congratulated Thomas, with Nazaire paying tribute to Rutherford in an Instagram post.
Rutherford and James were a popular couple during the series and performed some memorable routines. ITV thanked him for his contribution to the competition and wished him a speedy recovery
