A man has been charged with the murder of Thomas Campbell in Mossley in 2022. John Belfield, 29, who was deported from South America, is also facing charges of conspiracy to murder, manslaughter, conspiracy to rob, and conspiracy to supply class A drugs. He had been wanted by the police since Mr. Campbell’s body was found at his home in Riverside, Mossley. Three people had already been sentenced for their role in Mr. Campbell’s death.
Reece Steven, 29, was found guilty of murder with conspiracy to rob. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, serving a minimum of 37 years in prison. Steven Cleworth, 38, and Coleen Campbell, 38, were both found guilty of manslaughter with conspiracy to rob. Mr. Cleworth was sentenced to life imprisonment, serving a minimum of 12 years, while Ms. Campbell was sentenced to 13 years, serving a minimum of two-thirds in prison.
Det Ch Insp Liz Hopkinson of GMP’s major incident team thanked accomplices at the National Crime Agency and Suriname law enforcement, alongside GMP’s Specialist Operations and Force Critical Wanted Unit, for pursuing Belfield. A team of detectives is working hard on the case to ensure Mr. Campbell’s family gets the justice they deserve, and anyone with any information regarding the case can report to GMP or Crimestoppers.
The police investigation found that Thomas Campbell was robbed, tortured, and killed in his own home after being ambushed by three men.
