The band Gossip surprised their audience at the BBC 6 Music Festival in Greater Manchester recently by performing a cover of Yazoo’s ‘Situation’, accompanied by guest vocalist Alison Moyet of Yazoo. The new collaboration with Gossip shows Moyet returning to her roots, when she first sang with Vince Clarke on the 1982 classic ‘Only You’ with their band Yazoo, synth-pop pioneers of the early 80s.
Midway through Gossip’s set, vocalist Beth Ditto introduced Moyet on stage. “Please put your hands together for one of the icons of my life!” she said, followed by excited applause from the crowd. Gossip’s new tour will begin later this year, with Moyet’s voice now standing in for Clarke’s distinctive synth sound in some of their upcoming live performances.
Gossip’s comeback album, ‘A Joyful Noise’, was released in 2012, produced by Brian Higgins in his West London studio. The band first came to prominence in 2006 with their breakthrough album, ‘Standing In the Way Of Control’, after forming in Arkansas in 1999. Following their split in 2016, rumours have circulated about the group getting back together, and the sight of them performing with Moyet will only fuel the speculation.
Fans who missed out on the festival can watch the performance of ‘Situation’ on the BBC iPlayer. Later this year, Gossip will embark on a UK/EU tour, where they are among those slated to appear at this year’s All Points East in London, among other venues
