Belfast hip-hop trio, Kneecap has made their breakthrough US television appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where they performed their latest single Sick In The Head, taken from their forthcoming debut album Fine Art. The album, produced by Toddla T, is due to be released on June 14 via Heavenly Recordings.
While on the show, the band which consists of Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara, and DJ Próvaí, made a pro-Palestine statement, expressing their thoughts on current events. “Tonight was a pre-record performance, which meant our ability to make a statement on current events was not possible. We will always use our voice to speak about the genocide being committed against the Palestinian people, sadly being facilitated by the U.S. Use your voice to call for an immediate ceasefire and those responsible for war crimes to be brought to justice. Free Palestine.”
In a previous appearance, Kneecap made headlines after they ignored Irish public broadcaster, RTÉ’s request for them not to wear pro-Palestine badges. During their appearance on the show, DJ Próvaí took off his jacket to unveil his Palestinian national football shirt, while Moglaí Bap spoke about the band’s intent to address the genocide happening in Palestine. The band also performed Better Way To Live, their Grian Chatten collaboration.
Recently, Kneecap has accused the UK government of blocking approved funding from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). In a statement posted online, the band expressed disappointment at the government’s reaction, claiming that their 2019 Farewell to the Union poster upset the Tories. However, a spokesperson for the UK’s Business and Trade Secretary said “We fully support freedom of speech, but it’s hardly surprising that we don’t want to hand out UK taxpayers’ money to people that oppose the United Kingdom itself”.
Despite this dispute, Kneecap is set to tour the UK through London, Manchester, and Bristol this December, having already sold out in Dublin, and will perform at Electric Picnic in September
