North Yorkshire Police have made an unexpected discovery when they pulled over a BMW X5 that was towing a suspected stolen caravan on the M1. The driver of the vehicle was an 11-year-old boy. Officers arrested the boy, on suspicion of theft, burglary and motoring offences including dangerous driving. They received a call at around 15:30 on Thursday, informing them that a caravan had been stolen from a Holiday Inn near Thirsk and tracked the BMW which had cloned number plates. The car was heading south on the A1, and 45 minutes after the caravan was reported stolen, police stopped the vehicle on the M1 after it left the A1 at the Hook Moor Interchange near Garforth.

The police search of the BMW revealed a selection of vehicle registration plates. No one was hurt during the entire episode. Further investigation is being conducted into the incident. Meanwhile, the boy has been released on conditional bail. The incident regarding the underage boy driving a stolen vehicle has raised concerns over car thefts in the UK and the involvement of young people.

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, more than 23,000 vehicles were stolen in Canada last year, which raises alarm to drivers and police forces around the world. In the United Kingdom, individuals need to be aged 17 or above, with a provisional driving licence, to drive cars on public roads. However, in this case, an underage boy was found driving and stealing a vehicle. The situation has raised alarm bells for authorities, who are considering new methods to tackle the problem, including increasing the legal age to drive.

The incident reinforces the fact that car theft is still a significant issue that requires serious consideration by lawmakers. It has placed emphasis on measures to reduce this crime, which may include the introduction of new technology in vehicles, such as GPS trackers and immobilisers. These measures will prevent car thieves from stealing the vehicle and make it easier for law enforcement authorities to track them down. The incident highlights that it is not just adults who are stealing vehicles, but that children are also involved in such serious crimes. It is the duty of society to take appropriate steps to address this alarming issue
