British singer-songwriter Charli XCX debuted a new track, ‘So I’, written as a homage to her close collaborator SOPHIE, who passed away in 2021. The live performance took place on March 6th at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music event in Los Angeles. The song includes references to SOPHIE’s 2017 track, ‘It’s Okay to Cry’.
Charli XCX had previously shared that ‘So I’ was part of an album that would see her returning to her roots in club music. She had also said that the album would feature other songs dedicated to SOPHIE, who was her longtime friend and collaborator. Upon elaborating on the song, Charli said that the lyrics reflect the conversational nature of the album, with dialogue that is similar to text messages to friends.
Charli and SOPHIE had worked on multiple projects together since 2015, including Charli’s “Vroom Vroom” EP, and songs like “After the Afterparty,” “No Angel,” and “Girls Night Out,” among others. SOPHIE had contributed to Charli’s ‘Number 1 Angel’ and ‘Pop 2.’
Charli XCX, who is due to release a new album, ‘Brat’, in the summer, spoke about her upcoming album and the club music comment. She had previously mentioned that ‘Von Dutch’ would be one of the singles on the album
