The world of Dune has captivated sci-fi fans for decades, and now director Denis Villeneuve has introduced a new generation to its intricacies. Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel has since given rise to a book series, film and TV adaptations, and various video games set in the universe of Arrakis. Villeneuve’s film duology based on the first novel has been the most successful adaptation to date, with Dune: Part Two grossing $200 million worldwide during its opening weekend and earning a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.
Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, and Javier Bardem have all starred in the films. While there are technically 23 books in the entire Dune saga, only six of these were written by Frank Herbert. These are Dune (1965), Dune Messiah (1969), Children of Dune (1976), God Emperor of Dune (1981), Heretics of Dune (1984), and Chapterhouse: Dune (1985).
The remaining 17 books were written by Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert, and science fiction author Kevin J. Anderson, following Herbert’s death in 1986. These include prequels and sequels such as Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune, respectively, with some partially based on notes discovered after Frank’s death. Additionally, there are a number of short story collections, including The Road To Dune by Frank Herbert which was released in 1985.
While there have been countless iterations of Dune over the years, the ongoing saga continues to enthrall audiences of all ages. Only time will tell what the future holds for one of the most celebrated sci-fi stories of our time
